Full name hinting syntax reference

Modified on Fri, 24 Apr at 3:27 PM

Oho uses a name hinting system to parse complex names correctly. This is relevant for around 1% of people who have compound surnames, multiple given names, preferred names, salutations, or suffixes.

Syntax:

salutation firstname (preferredname) [middle names] "surname" (suffix)
Component Marker Notes
Salutation None (auto-detected) Common salutations: Mr, Mrs, Ms, Dr
First name Inferred position Before any brackets
Preferred name or alias Round brackets ( ) First set of round brackets
Middle names Square brackets [ ] One or more middle names
Surname Double quotes " " Use when surname has multiple parts
Suffix Round brackets ( ) Last set of round brackets (for example (III), (OAM))

Examples:

Name type Full Name entry
Single legal name only Flintstone
Simple name, no middle Fredrick Flintstone
Simple name with middle Fredrick William Flintstone
Preferred name Fredrick (Fred) William Flintstone
Compound surname Mary [Jo Sarah Jane] "Do Ray Me"
With salutation Mr Fredrick William Flintstone
With suffix Fredrick (Fred) William Flintstone (III)
Full complexity Ms Mary Jo (Mary) [Sarah Jane] "Do Ray Me" (OM)

For bulk imports, compound surnames can be entered as: "Fred [William] ""Flint Stone""" (double-quoted string with internal double quotes escaped).
